How to Prepare For An Eye Exam

Are you due to have your eyes checked? Regular eye exams are a smart way to protect your vision and eyes. At Michigan Eyecare Institute in Southfield, Dearborn, and Livonia, our optometrists offer a variety of eye care services. Not sure how to prepare for your eye exam? We’ll walk you through what to do to make sure you’re ready for your optometry appointment!

Make a List of Your Concerns

Is something about your vision or eyes worrying you? Write it down to share with our eye doctor. Do you have any symptoms that affect your eyes? Bring your list with you so you can discuss it with our optometrist.

Examples of symptoms or issues you might make note of include:

  • Any changes in your eyesight since your last exam
  • Frequent headaches
  • Eye strain
  • Floaters or spots in your vision
  • Trouble seeing at night or in dimly lit environments
  • Dry eyes or eye irritation

Don’t Forget Your Glasses or Contacts

This might be hard to do if you rely on them all the time. But if you don’t, you might not remember to bring them with you. Set a reminder to grab your glasses or contact lenses before heading out the door.

Bring Your Most Recent Prescription

If you wear corrective lenses, do you have your current prescription? Take it to your appointment. Our optometrist can compare it with your updated prescription to see how much your vision may have changed.

Give Your Eyes a Break

Avoid straining your eyes before your visit. Read instead of staring at screens. And get a good night’s sleep!

Bring Sunglasses

You might have your pupils dilated for your exam. This helps us get a better look at your eye structures to check for any damage or conditions. Bright lights can cause discomfort with pupil dilation, so bring a pair of sunglasses to shield your eyes from the sun!

Gather Family Information on Eye Diseases

Do any eye conditions run in your family? This can raise your risk of having these same conditions. Make a list of any eye diseases that family members have had, such as:

  • Glaucoma
  • Macular degeneration
  • Cataracts
  • Diabetes and diabetic retinopathy
